What are Terpenes?

Terpenes are powerful aromatic molecules responsible for the aroma and flavor of plants. But terpenes do way more than provide flavor and aroma. They support other cannabis molecules in producing wanted effects. We call this the entourage effect, and it’s the reason terpenes have become such a buzz.

You may know more about terpenes than you think! For example, lemons. Limonene is the terpene found in lemons and other citrus fruit rinds, like oranges and limes, giving them their fruity smell. Limonene is known for its anti-fungal and antibacterial properties. It is also known for its stress-relieving and mood-enhancing effects.

Another terpene, Linalool, is commonly found in lavender. Widely known for the ability to reduce stress, linalool is used as an anti-anxiety, antidepressant, and sedative. Linalool is also used to relieve seizure symptoms and to provide relief to those suffering from psychosis.

One more example are the terpenes alpha-pinene and beta-caryophyllene, these terpenes interfere with the molecules that dilate our blood vessels. Less dilation = less inflammation. So if pinene is anti-inflammatory, and CBD is also anti-inflammatory, then the body has a chance to fight inflammation from two different angles.

One popular brand in our store is Canna Trading Co, they specialize in terpene profiles and add their own blends to their products. Here is an excerpt from their website:

“We have developed special blends of natural plant terpenes after years of testing in order to create the different formulations. Each formula has it’s own terpene percentages and terpene profiles. Customer feedback strongly indicates their efficacy, and that is our reason to exist: to serve our beloved customers with effective and fairly valued formulations to enhance and enable our best lives.”
